2013 Fashion Resolutions

Generally, I don’t actually believe in New Year’s Resolutions – I make my list of goals (Thirteen in ’13) instead.  But, we’ll make an exception just this once!

OK, it’s January 9, and let’s be real, most of us have probably already blown off whatever resolution we made on January 1.  It’s OK.  This is totally a no judging zone.

Now that all of those boring resolutions are out of the way (seriously, giving up carbs is a terrible idea), let’s make a list of resolutions we can stick with . . . those concerning our fashion.  In 2013, our mission at YCS is to make sure you’re living your most chic life possible.

If you commit to these fashion resolutions, you shouldn’t have a misstep for the entire year!

2013 Fashion Resolutions

1. Step outside of your comfort zone.  We all get stuck in ruts.  A rut was what inspired the August Fashion Challenge.  So this year, make a concentrated effort to step outside of your comfort zone.  Even just a little

2. Get fitted for the right sized bra.  It makes me so sad to see women walking around everyday CLEARLY wearing the wrong undergarments.  Take the time to head to your local Victoria’s Secret, JCP, Nordstorm, Lane Bryant, Bloomingdale’s, La Perla, wherever (!) and have them fit you for the correct sized bra.  Then, take the time to try on different styles and sizes to make sure you’re wearing the proper bra and getting the coverage you want.  Also, invest in different types while you’re there – racerback, convertable, demi cup, t-shirt . . . you get the idea.  And finally, get any bra accessories you might need, like chicken cutlets (if you don’t know, ask), bra extenders, etc.  It will take some time but it is a trip well worth it.

3. Only wear THE most flattering clothes whether they cost $3 or $300.  Time out for ill-fitting, too-big, too-small, too-tight, too-loose clothing.  No more wearing something that is “kinda cute” or “sorta fits.”  This year, we will only wear the items that make us look like a million bucks, every day.  It will be difficult, but it can be done.

4. Try a new hairstyle.  It could be bangs, a top knot, a pixie, weave/extensions, a new color, curls, a blow-out, whatever.  Try it!  You might like it. And if you hate it remember, it’s just hair it will always grow back.

5. Dress like a grown-up.  Enough with the super casual, ill-fitting clothes.  Just because slightly sloppy is trendy again (hello rebirth of grunge, I’m looking at you)doesn’t mean that we have to participate.  Embrace tailored pieces, crisp lines, high heels and real materials (leather, gold, snake-skin).  You’ll thank me later.  Side note: I have nothing against new grunge.  It was one of the 2013 Trends that we counted down on New Year’s Day.  Missed the countdown? Follow YCS on Twitter (@urchicisshowing) and like us on Facebook (www.facebook.com/yourchicisshowing).

6. Wash off make-up EVERY night.  Admittedly, this is my worst. beauty. habit. ever.  No more!  I vow to remove my make-up every night and then moisturize.  You should too!

7. Keep the pedicure on point; yes, even in the cold months.  No matter if it’s an at-home selfie or from the nail salon, this year, we’re going to keep the tootsies in check!

8. Finally repair those pieces that have been neglected for months.  Sew in that new button, patch that hole and throw it out if it’s seen better days.  Let it go.

9. Splurge on one item.  Look, one ridiculously fab (and expensive) handbag (or whatever thing you’re coveting) isn’t going to kill you.  Just dot it already.  And, to avoid shoppers remorse buy something classic that will last a life time.

10. Look for fashion in all the right and wrong places.  Look, only the most closely trained eye knows the difference between a blazer that came from Bloomingdale’s and one that came from Target.  So stop being a slave to the little brown bag (or th LV logos, etc.) and check for fabulous finds EVERYWHERE.  My closet is equal parts Old Navy, Ann Taylor, Michael Kors and Calvin Klein.  There’s room in there for ’em all.

11. Stop impulse buying.  Those little displays of lip gloss and barrettes on the counter were made for suckers like me.  This is the year you and I stop getting duped into buying another lip gloss we don’t need.

12. If you don’t like the size label, but the garment fits, cut the label off!  Sometimes we gain weight, sometimes we lose it, and sometimes manufacturers have no idea what size they are making.  Perfect example: I have pieces in my closet right now from H&M that range from Medium to 1X (in their plus line).  All that says is that they’re dumb and have no idea how to size.  So, if you don’t like the size but you LOVE the frock, ditch the label!

13. Stop trying to dress like everybody else.  It’s OK to be inspired and emulate your favorites (my look is generally a nod to Jackie or Audrey) but don’t be a carbon copy.  Imitation is the highest form of flattery but swagger-jacking is totally obnoxious.

So, what do you think?  Can you stick to these resolutions?  Do you have any to add?  Weigh in below!

Your Chic is Showing,

                   With Love, Erika
