2013 Trends to Watch

2013 is in full gear and we’ve all had a couple of weeks to get into the swing of things.  As the fall runway shows get underway in February, there are still a TON of trends to look out for in 2013.  With a little help from our friends at E!, Style and your favorite fashion magazines, I’ve narrowed down a list of the top 7 trends to be on the lookout for in 2013.

It’s really easy to get caught up in all the trends.  But remember, not all trends will work for everyone.  Pick only the trends that 1) you like and 2) are flattering on you.  And, if you need to modify, by all means do so!  For example, I love, love, love the black and white trend that is everywhere (and #1 on our list). However, I look horrible in the geometric prints that often accompany the black and white trend (think the checkerboard prints seen on the Louis Vuitton runway or jagged stripes in Marc Jacobs’ ads).  So, I do black and white my way – using the colors in a more traditional and classic way and avoiding the harsh shapes that do my body no good!

And actually, this leads us to our #1 Trend for 2013 – Black and White.  This look was not only on the Louis Vuitton runway, as mentioned above, but also all over Calvin Klein and Oscar de la Renta.  The great thing about this trend is that we can all wear it.  It’s easily mixed and matched with the things that we already have in our closets (as showcased below) and it’s a safe way to experiment with bold patterns or prints (if your heart so desires).

Speaking of bold patterns and prints, our #2 and #3 Trends for 2013 are Tribal Prints and Graphic Prints.  Ethnic and tribal prints were seen on the runways of BCBG Max Azria and Michael Kors.  And the likes of L’Wren Scott, Louis V (he’s all over the trends!) and Marc Jacobs showcased graphic prints in checkerboard and stripes.  The patterns in prints came in beautiful maxi dresses, structured suits and lightweight fabrics which ensures that there is something for everyone.  If you’re like me and a little “print averse,” try rocking a tribal or graphic print on a bag or scarf to get used to it.  We can graduate to bigger items later.

Also popular on the runways was our #4 Trend for 2013 – Structure.  Givenchy, Prada and Rodarte all showcased structured pieces on the runway.  Defined by sharp lines, you’ll want to think oragami dresses and architectural skirts when rocking this trend.  This is a great trend if you’re bold and brave.  The pieces look clean, crisp and sharp.

Being the girly girl that I am, I simply adored the #5 Trend for 2013, Fluidity and Flounce, seen on the runways of Chloe, Balenciaga, Gucci and Prabal Gurung (side note: Can’t WAIT for the Target collection in Feb!).  Any excuse to rock exaggerated ruffles, sheer, flowy fabrics and, big, oversized necklines gets two thumbs up in my book!  Bonus points if you can combine this with the super hot Black and White trend a la Balenciaga.

Here’s the great thing about 2013, whether you’re a warm or cool skin-tone, colors that complement you are IN as the #6 and #7 Trends for 2013.  That’s right, Hot and Cool shades are in.  Blues, greens, emeralds and aquas were all over the runways of Alice & Olivia, Monique Lhuillier, and my personal fave, Michael Kors.  And reds, hot pinks and poppy were seen at Gucci, Valentino and Burberry Prorsum (I am dying for the hot pink, metallic trench which would make the ULTIMATE 30th birthday present – in case you’re wondering).  Now, we have no excuse not to rock clothes and colors that look FABULOUS on us!

So, my fashion hawks, what trends have you noticed for 2013 thus far?  Are there any that are your favorites?  Clearly, I’m LOVING black and white.  What are you loving?  Send in pics and show us how you’re wearing the latest trends!  I’m sure your looks will inspire the rest of us!

Your Chic is Showing,

  1. Fantastic post!!! I, of course, love black and white. Also, I’m really feeling a lot of the colors that are cropping up for next season. I’ve decided that instead of trying to run out and buy a bunch of different apparel, I’m going to incorporate those colors into my makeup and accessories (scarves, earrings, etc.).

    1. The black and white makes looking chic so easy!! I love the idea of adding color through make-up and accessories!! That’s brilliant. I plan to embrace some of the ethnic prints I’ve been seeing. There is a beautiful Michael Kors maxi dress with my name all over it!!!

Would love it if you did a post on your fave colorful make-up and accessories. Color on my face tends to scare me so I’d love some tips!!

  2. I like the black and white and I like structure. I find it to be more flattering. I also like anything sheer or with empelishments. 🙂

    1. If you like sheer and embellishments then you probably do a modified version of fluidity and flounce. Think pretty ruffled necklines or exaggerated peplums. You would still get a flattering, structured fit while also getting movement.

You could also try fluidity and flounce in a structured material (think the cute skater skirts seen in leather that have been everywhere). I would also suggest playing with proportions because you might find something you like outside of your comfort zone.

Finally, try colors! You are beautiful and I bet you look best in spring and summer colors. Beautiful pinks, yellows, and poppys would, without a doubt, look fantastic!
