YCS How-to: Use Dry Shampoo (featuring Indique Hair Care Essential: Dry Shampoo)

Henderson on the red carpet

Please note: this is NOT a sponsored post and all opinions expressed are my own.

Let it be known, I became completely obsessed with dry shampoo last year when I began working out while wearing a hair weave. Dry shampoo became my go-to product after tough workouts with my trainer or long-runs gearing up for my half-marathon. Soon, I began using dry shampoo on especially humid days and just generally between regular washes. It really is a life saver.

So, what is Dry Shampoo?

Basically, dry shampoo is a powder or spray that is used to extend the life of a hairstyle (like a fab blowout) or when regular shampoo and water aren’t practical (like every single day after the gym).

What brand do I use?

Up until a couple of weeks ago I was a pretty faithful user of TRESemme Fresh Start Smoothing Dry Shampoo and Dove Invigorating Dry Shampoo. But that all changed when I spotted Indique’s new Hair Care Essential: Dry Shampoo at a private bloggers event a couple of weeks ago in the Indique Philadelphia boutique. I’m pretty sure everyone at the event could literally see me salivating over this product. I was DYING to get my hands on a can to give it a shot! Lucky for me, I was able to score a can and put it to good use immediately after my next workout.

While this post will give you a how-to on using dry shampoo, I must take a minute to share my thoughts on Indique’s Dry Shampoo. Simply put, I love it. The spray is super lightweight and didn’t weigh my hair down at all. It made my (sweaty) scalp feel fresh and clean and there was no excess product to brush or comb out of my hair. The best part is that it added the perfect amount of volume to my hair. So, in the event that I wanted to spray some dry shampoo in my hair and head out to happy hour after a workout (and shower, of course!) I totally could! After two weeks, it is clear that a can of Indique’s Hair Care Essential: Dry Shampoo is sure to live in my gym bag AND on my dresser!

How to Use Dry Shampoo

The tools: Dry shampoo (either powder or spray, like Indique’s Hair Care Essential: Dry Shampoo), brush, comb, dry hair (do NOT apply on wet or damp hair), your fingers.

Yup, that’s it!

Step 1: Prep your Hair

Remove any hair bands, headbands, hair ties, bobby pins, etc. from your hair. Comb out your hair to make sure there are no tangles.

Separate your real hair from your hair weave (if necessary). I use a clip or pony tail holder to separate my hair.

Step 2: Apply the Dry Shampoo

If you’re using a powder, sprinkle powder on your head, especially areas that are particularly oily. If you’re using a spray (like I did), spray your hair with the product. On hair weave, keep the spray 3-6 inches away from your head and spray where hair is bonded or sewn in. On your real hair, keep the can 1-3 inches away and spray the roots.

Regardless of which type of dry shampoo you use, run your fingers through your hair to distribute the product. You can also use a brush to help distribute the product.

Step 3: Wait

After you have applied and distributed your hair product, give it 3-5 minutes to absorb into your hair and scalp. Then, take a moment to comb out any excess product. You’re more likely to have excess product with a powder product than with a spray.

Step 4: Style as Usual (or Go on Your Way)

After you’ve given the product a chance to dry, you can go ahead about your business and carry on with your life (as you can see from the pic at the very bottom my hair is ready for the world); or, you can feel free to style as usual (as evidenced by my pin curls).

As you can see, dry shampoo is a super life saver! It’s perfect for a post workout refresher, keeping your blowout fresh or volumizing your locks. And this girl totally recommends Indique’s Hair Care Essential: Dry Shampoo; it’s light, volumizing (without giving your frizz), and doesn’t leave your hair sticky or icky!

Do you use dry shampoo? If so, what do you look for? If not, do you think you’ll be giving Indique’s Hair Care Essential: Dry Shampoo a shot? You know the drill!
