“The ultimate struggle isn’t ‘good vs evil,’ it’s ‘what to wear to homecoming?'” -YCS Erika
As I mentioned on Friday, homecoming at my alma mater, Howard University, is a big freakin’ deal. As you’ll see in my recap post (coming soon), there is a reason that we are consistently named one of the best dressed colleges in the nation. Fashion, among other things (like educating the nation’s and world’s premiere leaders, doctors, lawyers, educators, entertainers, etc.), is what we do.
It is always good to go “home” and catch-up with old friends. This year felt even more special because all along the way a number of people stopped me to share how much they enjoy reading YCS! Imagine my surprise (and delight) when I walked through the tailgate and heard someone yell “hey your chic is showing!” I honestly felt like a kid on Christmas – completely surprised, excited, delighted and overwhelmed. My Bison family is a special one and I appreciate each and every member of that family who has also become a valued part of the YCS family.
During the festivities I made a couple promises to share what I wore throughout the weekend. So, I’ve pulled together two of the looks on polyvore so that you can shop the pieces and add them to your collection. You will notice that some pieces are repeated throughout the weekend. When I pack for a trip, I aim to keep everything in the same color family so that I can reuse items like shoes, jewelry, or handbags. You’ll definitely notice some patterns throughout the looks – like top knots & red lips.
Friday Night: Black Hollywood Party
The minute I saw this dress I fell in love. I knew that I wouldn’t need to add much to it because it had the great stud and cut-out detail. I kept my hair simple, added a bright lip, and rocked some cute studded half gloves. A Nneka Saran handbag and Nine West pumps completed the look.
Saturday: Alumni Tailgate
I have shared on numerous occasions how much I LOVE my CAbi grid vest I purchased from Karima of Skinny Minority. I seriously find a way to wear this piece once a week. It was a no brainer to anchor Saturday’s look, which had to be equal parts fashion and function, with this piece. As you’ll see from the picture below with the lovely Lisa, accessories and the vest pop against my all black (and very warm) ensemble.
