Who hasn’t heard of popular discount clothing websites such as Rue La La, 6PM, Overstock, etc. – the list goes on. I’ll be debuting my kid’s style column with a series critiquing discount sites by giving you the best and worst of what they have to offer. Today I’ll cover Zulily.
The first thing you notice about Zulily is its name. What does Zulily mean? At first thought, you might think it sounds like a galaxy far far away; but, it’s actually an imaginative name the founders created because they thought it sounded fun and energetic. The owners didn’t want any preconceived ideas about the company and wanted a name that was fresh and creative.
The Best of Zulily
Let’s start with some of the best things I’ve noticed about the site. They offer some great brands, such as Coccoli, Smart Wool, Alex toys, CachCach, Smencils, Stride Rite, Rabbit Moon, Lands End, Melissa & Doug, etc. For example, I saw great deals on Smencils smelly art pencils. I’ve seen these in boutique toy stores and they are pricey for the amount that you get. Zulily was offering a discount on a value pack of these pencils, which I’ve never seen. For the budding artist, Crayola deals were recently showcased on the Zulily site and I am kicking myself for not taking advantage of them, especially the Color Wonder deals (no worries about color on furniture or clothing with these).
Kids shoes are so expensive these days and I’m a mom who believes in buying quality shoes for those precious feet. If you know the shoe brand and how they run (big or small) this site is a haven for ridiculously good deals on shoes.
One of my favorite clothing items on the site has been hats. I love the hats that have been featured by Beardo. They have some adorable long beanie hats with great designs and Cabbage Patch-esque doll hair hats that will catch anyone’s eye (see pic above). There are great clothes for the 0-18 month range from companies like Vitamins Baby and a lot of organic clothing companies.
The Worst of Zulily
Now, let me just start out by saying that this is my opinion, but I absolutely detest the trendy bell bottom tops and sets I see for girls all over this site. I don’t want my daughter looking like she just got off stage from a disco performance and I just think these styles are unflattering. I’m also not a fan of tutu sets or clothes that have gaudy tulle flowers and sequins. It’s just not my thing and these types of clothes seem to be frequent specialties on the site.
Conclusion
Overall, Zulily appeals to me for their great deals on infant clothes, accessories, shoes, and toys. It’s been a joy to browse their daily deals and I’ve discovered a lot of brands that I didn’t know existed.
