You're Invited: An Exclusive Shopping Event

By Erika, Fashion Expert

Good Morning YCS Family!  I am so excited to announce that my dear friend JaKela and I are co-hosting an exclusive “Shop My Closet” event especially for all of the curvy cuties out there!  We are taking “thrifting” to the next level with this exclusive shopping event.

Here’s the deal:

JaKela and I both have closets full of never-worn and barely-worn clothes (size 12-24W), shoes (size 7.5 – 11) and accessories (jewelry, bags and scarves).  We’re not talking junk, we are talking quality items from stores and designers like Badgley Mischka, J.Crew, Calvin Klein, Jones New York, Eloquii, Lane Bryant (and that’s all just MY closet), etc.  The items are in excellent condition and deserve to live in a home where they will be loved, cared for, and worn until they fall apart.  That’s not going to happen in either of our houses. We believe it is only right to invite our friends, family, loyal YCS readers, and Philly fashionistas come and shop our closet for fabulous items at can’t beat prices!

Here’s how it works:

JaKela and I have secured a private location to host this exclusive shopping event.  Our guests will join us from 12 noon – 3 pm for sips, snacks, and, most importantly, shopping.  There will be plenty of room for you to try on items and build an entire look.  I’ll be there to give you styling tips and advice and answer any questions that you might have.  And, once you have finished shopping you can feel free to lounge around and chat it up with me, JaKela and the other ladies.  Your exclusive shopping experience will give you access to great clothing, great prices, fashion expertise and styling advice.  There may even be a special announcement or two at the event! This is your chance to shop like the superstar we all know that you are!

Any clothing that is not sold will be donated to the Wardrobe Boutique.

YCS (Men's) Guide to Spring: Sock Game

By Donte’, Men’s Style VIP

This Friday marks the first day of spring!  That means cleaning out those closets, packing away those heavy winter sweaters, and pulling out those warm weather clothes.  Spring is a time full of color and my wardrobe tends to reflect just that!

This year I am going to attempt to draw inspiration from one of the most neglected areas in my wardrobe…SOCKS.  My friends seem to have pretty nice sock collections (especially Esquire and Mr. Detroit), so I am challenging myself to step up in that area.  A little touch goes a long way and a nice sock is a small, often inexpensive item that can change your entire look and take you to the next level of fashion.

Since they aren’t always visible, socks can add a touch of surprise to your outfit.  They can be as colorful or mute as you like and they don’t have to match the pattern or color scheme of your shirt or pants.  In fact, they stand out even more if they don’t match the pattern or color scheme of your other clothing items.  They provide the perfect starting point for me to start experimenting with new pattern and color combinations.

Here are some of the new players in my sock game that I’ll be trying out this spring.  I’m pretty excited to start!  Let me know what you think.

By Erika, Resident Fashionista

Whew! It has been a complete whirlwind around YCS! As you guys have seen, we’ve pretty much been going non-stop since various fashion weeks began in September! We’ve been attending tons of fabulous events and hosting a few of our own!

On October 12th and 13th YCS had the pleasure of attending the Curvy Closets Fashion Show and C.U.R.V.V. Exhibit Opening and movie premiere. To get details about the events you can click here, here, here, here, and here.

Below are some of the pictures YCS captured at the two events.

Curvy Closets

Personally, I love that Philadelphia is embracing fashion for curvy women. I only hope that we’ll see more events like this in the future! Did any of our readers get a chance to go to these events? If so, what did you think?

Curves Ahead (Part 2): C.U.R.V.V.

By Erika, Resident Fashionista

I clearly didn’t learn my days of the week in kindergarten because this is a special SUNDAY edition of YCS, not Saturday as promised in Part 1. Charge it to my head and not my heart!

After last night’s AWESOME Curvy Closets fashion show I am even more excited to share my footage from the cast interviews from the short film “C.U.R.V.V,” which will accompany tonight’s exhibit of the same name. C.U.R.V.V. is an Exhibit Curated by ChaCha N’Kole and will debut at the University of Pennsylvania Museum. This is the “first ever museum exhibition to highlight full-figured high-fashion.” I am beyond excited to be covering this event!

Check out the YCS TV video that gets some behind the scenes details about the film, where you can find the cast members on social media, and what fashion tips they shared with us! After editing this video, I’m 100% convinced that I NEED a microphone to block out the background noise and will be ordering one “ASAPtually!” I apologize for the background noise. The important part is that you can hear the cast and the positive messages they are sharing with curvy girls around the world.

If you’re a total procrastinator and still want to go to the event, the great news is that tickets are still available. Simply visit to learn more about the exhibit and snag your tix!

Whew!! Between Curvy Closets, C.U.R.V.V, and Reinvention Weekend (hosted by the Melinda F. Emerson Foundation) YCS has had a BUSY weekend! What did you guys do? Be sure to check back for all of the pictures from this weekend’s events.

Curves Ahead (Part 1): Curvy Closets

By Erika, Resident Fashionista

This weekend in Philadelphia is all about curvy women!  On Saturday October 12, the Curvy Closets Fashion Show will take over the City of Brotherly Love and on Sunday October 13 C.U.R.V.V., an exhibit curated by ChaCha N’Kole with a corresponding short film, will make it’s debut at the UPenn Museum.

Both events celebrate curvy, full-figured, plus size women and all I have to say is, “it’s about darn time!”  Today, I’m bringing you some behind-the-scenes footage from the Curvy Closets casting call held at BellaNOR Boutique.  Tomorrow, in a special Saturday edition of YCS, I’ll have behind-the-scenes scoop from the C.U.R.V.V. set!  It’s a curvy weekend for sure and I can’t WAIT to be a part of the action!

A few weeks ago, YCS had the opportunity to chat with the co-producers of Curvy Closets, Colleen ( and Dominique ( and YCS fave Aleea Slappy, of A Happy Slappy Greeting, Inc. (, who will be the Curvy Correspondent at the fashion show.  The three lovely ladies shared some insider info about what to expect at the fashion show and their fall must-haves.  Take some time to check out the video and hear what the girls had to say.

Please note: Although we’ve got the fashion thing down, we’re only amateur cinematographers; we didn’t realize quite how loud the cars driving by would be.  We’re still working out some of the kinks so please bear with us!

Sounds great, doesn’t it?  Well, lucky for you, you can still get tickets; but, you have to hurry!  Visit to get details on the event and how you can get your tickets!  Today is your LAST day to purchase them and you DON’T want to miss this awesome celebration of curvy women!

Be sure to check back tomorrow for a special Saturday YCS post all about C.U.R.V.V.

We know where we’ll be this weekend.  Will we see you there?

A Special Note: You still have two days to vote for YCS at  We are so excited to be nominated and are thankful for everyone who continues to support us!  If you want to hear more about YCS and why you should vote for us, check out the interview YCS did with the ladies of The Step Sisters Blog (twitter: @stepsisters blog; YouTube Channel:  We’re around the 20 minute mark!

Thank you to the ladies of the Step Sisters Blog for allowing us to join them!  It was truly a blast!!

International Designers Shine at Atlantic City Fashion Week

By Erika, Resident Fashionista

On September 27 and 28, YCS attended Atlantic City Fashion Week held at the Pier Shops at Caesar’s in Atlantic City, NJ. YCS checked out the ready-to-wear, plus sized, and couture runway presentations from a number of designers over the two-days. While some collections were disappointing and considerably non-cohesive, there were a few standouts, notably the collections presented by international designers Mitan Ghosh, Waisted Lace Corsets, and Suma Polepalli, and consignment/vintage shops Cultured Couture and Fab Finds. I also enjoyed checking out the children’s collections presented – though it’s hard to tell what was more adorable, the fashions or the tiny models strutting down the runway!

The international designers presented looks that moved effortlessly down the runway, applied a creative mix of “East and West” in their designs, and were showstopping. Mitan Ghosh and Suma Polepalli incorporated traditional garments like Saris into their collections with beautiful prints, colors, fabrics and details. The amount of time it must have taken to complete impeccable bead and crystal work is not lost on YCS. Waisted Lace Corsets’ were fantastical, beautiful, and often, practical. There were more than a few pieces I could see pairing with an adorable pencil skirt or pair of jeans for a night on the town. Cultured Couture presented looks that embodied the refined elegance I have come to expect from them. And Fab Finds did an excellent job of pulling together classic, elegant looks for all sizes from the clothes in their consignment shop.

The scene stealers, however, were the kids. The designs were cute, playful and adorable. Though, as an aunt to a 3 and 4 year old, I’m not sure how realistically wearable they were. Regardless, their models stole the show with their sass, spunk, and complete cuteness. Be warned, the pics and video are probably going to be too much to handle!

Check out the photos and videos we were able to capture from the two-day event!

Fun Fashion Week Pop-Ups

By Alexis

This past week marked the kick-off of Philly Fashion Week, or PFW, and the city of brotherly love did not disappoint.

There were a ton of cool fashion shows and pop-ups for us fashionistas. I was thrilled to attend two pop-ups on behalf of Your Chic is Showing.

First up was the PFW Fashion & Style Event/LUX Accessories Pop-up at Tommi Studio Salon & Spa. I was very excited to go to this event (they promised manicures, massages, live hair and makeup-demos), but sadly, the only thing they had to offer were the accessories. Even though I was a little bit disappointed, I still had a great evening and found some really cool pieces. Below are some of my favorites!

Untitled Untitled1 Untitled2

These three accessories from the Sylvans Collection, located in New York, were brought in by Angela Edmunds, from showroom77, and her friend Briana Rivas, who is a fashion and beauty blogger for Sequin Gowns & Mermaid Crowns.  Angela told me that statement rings are very in right now and I have to say, they were my favorite. She recommended wearing a couple on each hand if you want to bump it up a notch. I also learned that you couldn’t go wrong with a pop of color in the Fall.

You can find Angela at and Briana at

Untitled4 Untitled3 5

These pieces were brought in from Jessica Healey who is the Philadelphia representative for Cayetano Legacy Collection. This collection was made by three sisters who are first generation Philippino-Americans. It was amazing to see their heritage incorporated into the collection as some jewelry contained all natural stones straight from the Philippines. Jessica’s favorite piece was the gold draping beads necklace; she was a huge advocate of Fall statement accessories.

If I had to pick my own statement piece it would have been the flower necklace. The craftsmanship was definitely top notch.

You can check out this jewelry at There’s also a 20% discount that you can use which is CLCPHILLY.

These last two pieces were brought in by Phenise and Ms. Brenda from their company Plain Elain. Phenise wanted to make head pieces that were affordable and gorgeous and I think she succeeded. I especially loved the studded headbands and the veils. Phenise said veils are very in for Fall and people should not be afraid to try them. This sounds perfect for the Fall bride. J

You can find these pieces at

The other pop-up event I went to was the Fashionaires Vintage Designer Pop-up at the Palomar Hotel. This was a gorgeous venue for an upscale event. The Fashionaires, Tara Destribats, and her sister-in-law, Tracey, have done pop-ups in New York and New Jersey so it was exciting that they came to Philadelphia. This event had beautiful vintage designer pieces and fantastic discounts. Below are some pictures of all the gorgeous clothes and accessories.

Overall this was a fun week and I enjoyed being able to go to these events on behalf of Your Chic is Showing. Plus, you can never have too many excuses to dress up. Is MY chic showing? I hope so!

Philly Fashion Week Recap

By Erika, Resident Fashionista

Hey guys! As I mentioned last week, YCS is covering a TON of fashion events and giving you all of the scoop. On Friday and Saturday September 20 and 21, YCS Alexis and I attended Philly Fashion Week’s Ready-to-Wear and Couture Runway Shows. Nearly 30 designers were on hand to present their latest collections for all to see!

While there were plenty of memorable moments and pieces, here are my favorites from the weekend.

Faithful by Michael Thomas
Once again, Michael Thomas did not disappoint. Originally scheduled to close out Friday’s shows, Michael ended up opening the show with a bang! The cobalt blues, yellows and silvers that weaved throughout this cohesive collection were a beautiful, bold statement made by the designer. Per usual, Michael’s tailoring was impeccable and it was clear from this collection that he has the construction skills and understanding of woman’s body to back up all the hype. Michael’s spring/summer 2014 collection was ultra-feminine, which was a sharp contrast to his fall/winter 2013 collection. The luxe and sophisticated fabrics moved beautifully down the runway. Once again, we were presented with a stellar collection from Michael Thomas.

The Menswear Designers
Aside from Michael Thomas, other standouts of the weekend were the menswear designers, particularly Friday night’s bunch. The collections Chevalier Homme, Extraordinary Gentleman, and Modish presented were among my favorites of the weekend. Some thoughts I used to describe the collections in my notes were, “impeccably tailored men’s pieces; cross between hipster and nerd but much, much cooler; cohesive and confident,” (Chevalier Homme); “crisp, clean, easy; mixed materials but still no fuss; effortless; a cool mix of male and female silhouettes,” (Extraordinary Gentleman); “worked the leather beautifully; from the runway to Yeeze’s closet to mine; beautifully constructed; thoughtful, well planned and executed collection,” (Modish).

Check out our YCS TV video featuring Michael Thomas’ full runway presentation.

Couture Designers
One of my disappointments was that many of the designers in the couture shows actually presented ready-to-wear collections and would have been better suited for Friday’s runway. However, two Saturday standouts were Closet by Christobal and Cory Couture. Closet by Christobal presented beautifully designed (and wearable) pieces accented with over-the-top headpieces and accessories. If you’ve hung around YCS enough, you know I LOVE a fantastic headpiece! They even threw hats into the audience during the finale walk – and you know I was able to snag one! Cory Couture presented one of the only true couture runway shows of the evening. The pieces displayed the over-the-top whimsy and designs one hopes to see at a couture show. While some seemed slightly over-worked, the quality, craftsmanship, and overall beauty were undeniable.

Here are some photos from Saturday and video from the weekend’s events.

To get details on FBH Philly Fashion Week and all the presenting designers, visit the Philly Fashion Week Website.

Which looks are your favorites? Anything you’re dying to get your hands on? I’m currently hunting down the leather sweater/sweatshirt from Modish – how cool would that look with a ultra-feminine skirt?? You know we want to hear from you in the comments!

And don’t forget, you’ve got a few more days to vote for YCS at!

FBH Philly Fashion Week Ready-to-Wear Runway Show, Crane Arts (FBH Philly Fashion Week)
On the first night of FBH Philly Fashion Week’s runway shows, 14 designers will show off their latest ready-to-wear runway collections.
Who we’re dying to see: Michael Thomas, a favorite of YCS, earns the coveted closing show at tonight’s runway presentation. That’s a tall order; but, if anyone is up for the challenge it is Mr. Thomas whose collections are always thoughtfully put together with a continuity and maturity that far exceeds his years.

September 21

FBH Philly Fashion Week concludes with the Haute Couture Runway show where 12 local and national designers will display the latest in haute couture fashion.
Who we’re dying to see: Andrew Nowell designs chic and trendy menswear that emphasizes quality, comfort, style and fit. The ladies here at YCS love a man in a tailored ensemble and I, for one, am looking forward to seeing what comes down the runway.

September 27 & 28
Atlantic City Fashion Week Full Figured and Ready to Wear Runway Show, The Pier Shops at Caesar’s (Atlantic City Fashion Week)
Atlantic City Fashion Week Couture Runway Show, The Pier Shops at Caesar’s (Atlantic City Fashion Week)

Once again, YCS will be covering the runways of Atlantic City Fashion Week held at the Pier Shops at Caesar’s. At the spring shows, I fell in absolute LOVE with Duke and Winston ( and I’m hoping for a similar experience with the designers showcasing during the fall shows.
Who we’re dying to see: Cultured Couture has been on my radar since 2012 when I saw them at an outdoor fashion event in Rittenhouse park. The sophisticated, vintage looks make me yearn for the days when people dressed up for everything – whether it was a trip to the market or a trip to another country.

October 12
Curvy Closets, The Crane Arts
As you guys know from our previous post, YCS will be at the Curvy Closets Fashion Event to give you all the latest scoop on the plus sized fashion scene. Alexis and I had a chance to get some behind-the-scenes details from Curvy Closets co-producers, Colleen and Dominique, and the Curvy Closets Correspondent, friend to YCS, Aleea from A Happy Slappy Greeting! My interviews will be posted soon, but you can check out a couple sneak peeks on the YCS Instagram and Facebook accounts.

October 13
C.U.R.V.V. , an Exhibit Curated by ChaCha N’Kole, University of Pennsylvania Museum
There is a ton of full figured love going around these days and this exhibit and short film keep on spreading it! This is the “first ever museum exhibition to highlight full-figured high-fashion.” All I have to say is, “it’s about darn time!” I’m super excited to be covering this event and getting and exclusive interview with the cast of the corresponding short film, also entitled “C.U.R.V.V.” Make sure you come check out this event!
