What I Love Right Now (January 2020)

By Erika, Fashion Expert

I have a LOT of things I love. A lot of products I swear by. A lot of things I simply can’t live without. But my list of things I love is always growing. So, each month I’m going to share with you guys what I’m loving for that month. In the words of Andy Cohen, “here’s what three things I’m obsessed with [this month]!”

Press-On Nails

Yep. Like the kind we used as a kid. Or our moms used in the 80s. Yes, press on nails. I promise. I’m loving them these days. Here’s why:

  1. I’m on a budget. In 2020, hubs and I are laser focused on our financial goals. And my bi-weekly gel manicure with a design habit was starting to get expensive. Not to mention, it was tearing up my naturally strong and beautiful nails. Press-Ons are a cheap alternative to this. Depending on the brand you get (I’m a fan of Kiss and Static), a box will run you $7-$15. Even if you buy a box a week, you’re spending $60/month at most. That’s essentially the cost of one of my visits to the nail salon when I calculate gel, design, and tip.
  2. They’re easy. You simply file them to fit your fingernail shape and nail bed. Apply your glue, sit still for 2 or 3 minutes and you’re on your way.
  3. It’s a good way to try different nail designs and shapes without much of a commitment. Hate it? Who cares, you can take them off after a day or a week. These nails come in all shapes, colors and lengths. The are a great way to be versatile without much investment.

In fact, I am so in love with them, my first “60 Seconds of Chic” was all about them. Check it out!

Fun, Bold Sneakers

It probably comes as a surprise to exactly nobody that I haven’t always been into sneakers. For many years I didn’t own any sneakers beyond my workout shoes. That all changed when I met my husband who is a bonafide sneaker head. He quickly started converting me and helping get my sneaker game up. I am by no means a sneaker head but I do have a respectable growing collection.

Right now though, I’m living for fun and bold sneakers. My two favorite pairs are my Adidas Questar Flow sneakers (I didn’t know I needed butterflies on my sneakers until I saw these) and my Nike Star Runners in Red (purchased in Big Kids size because, hey, I have small feet!).

I’m obsessed with these shoes because they add instant style and pop to any basic outfit. Whether I’m running errands or running through the airport, these shoes add interest to my outfit.

Violet Fox Monogram Tote

I love anything with a monogram. Always have. Always will. So I am fully obsessed with this amazing tote I ordered from Violet Fox on Black Friday. It’s the perfect work tote – it fits all of my essentials – and it is classic and stylish. I love this bag. That’s it – I love it!

Check back next month for more of what I’m loving!

5 Last Minute Holiday Gifts for Those Who Like to Live Dangerously and Shop at the Last Minute

By Erika, Fashion Expert

I don’t necessarily like living on the edge.  OK, I don’t like it at all.  But I know some of you do and that extreme Christmas shopping is your thing.  I’m still so tickled by the texts I get on the 20th, 21st, and 22nd of December asking what I think “so and so” would like for Christmas.  Just having to come up with ideas stresses me out – so I can’t imagine having to fight off the crowds two and three days before Christmas.  Hopefully, this list will help you adrenaline junkies who love the adventure of completing your holiday shopping just under the deadline!

For the Bride or Groom that is Changing Their Name

eefefdd8-a70d-4463-a446-34a5e26c32c8

I have said this many times – and will keep saying – Hitchswitch is one of the very best wedding gifts I received.  Although my husband couldn’t use it, it made the process of legally changing my name relatively painless.  There are three package options; but please, splurge on the Platinum Package as your gift.  For only $89 the recipient will receive the full suite of Hitchswitch services include ready-to-ship passport photo (no post office line or awkward photos) and a personal name change concierge who will help with things like getting hotel and airline miles straightened out.  You recipient will be forever grateful!

For the Bibliophile

I’m not sure why I waited so long to get a subscription to Audible but now I can’t imagine life without it!  I love to listen to my podcasts on my drive to and from work and now I mix up my rotation with audiobooks.  There are thousands of titles to choose from plus a monthly selection of free original books that are a part of the subscription.  You can read everything from autobiographies to memoirs to the classics and everything in between.  Need a few recommendations to get started? I recommend:

For the Sentimental Crowd

I found these little letter books and feel in love instantly! Lea Redmond’s “Letters to” series offers the buyer a chance to write meaningful notes and letters to loved ones that can be opened at the appropriate time.  For example, “Letters to Open When” allows you to write notes of encouragement, support, etc. to be opened when the recipient is having a rough time, needs a smile, or wants to be hugged by your words.  You can write letters to your parents, your children, and even your future self!  Bonus for you, two day shipping because Amazon Prime is GOAT.

For the Beauty Junky

img_8234

You may, or may not, have heard of Aztec Secret – Indian Healing Clay.  If you haven’t, now you have.  This incredible face mask has more than 19,000 reviews on Amazon and is said to work wonders for your skin.  I’ve only started using it in the last two weeks, but count me among the believers!  Any bonafide beauty junky is going to love – and swear by – the stuff!  Two-day shipping reigns supreme again when you order from Amazon.

For the Charitable Fashionista

Give the gift of a microfinance loan through Global Girlfriend and support women-owned small businesses in Africa.  Seriously, how cool is it that your donation can help break the cycle of poverty and boost economic development by providing women with business management training and financial assistance to start and grow their small businesses, specifically in Sierra Leone.  This is truly the gift that keeps on giving.

I hope this list helps you round out your holiday shopping over the next few days!  And, of course, I’m wishing you and your loved ones a joyous holiday season and the happiest New Year!

Stay Chic,
Erika

YCS Bride Guide: Engraved Watches – The Perfect Wedding Gift

Bride Guide Logo

By Erika, Fashion Expert

I can’t believe that our wedding is less than two weeks away! So crazy to think that it is almost here!  The last few weeks before a wedding are a flurry of activity.  There is a lot of time spent pulling together final details, adding special touches, and managing forgotten tasks (hey, it happens!).  What you will NOT want to do in the final weeks leading up to the wedding is scramble for wedding gifts.  For brides and grooms who are looking for meaningful gifts for their future spouse, parents, or even their bridal party, consider a beautiful, unique wooden watch from JORD Watches.

About JORD Watches

JORD watches have been hand crafted from 100% natural wood.  The company focuses on creating timepieces that are modeled after a modern lifestyle. They value sustainability (hello, wood!!!!), efficiency, and experiential living.

JORD offers stylish options for both men and women on their website.

3 Reasons to Gift a JORD Watch

One
DESIGN: Raw Material, Refined Design

I have the FRANKIE Series watch in Zebrawood & Champagne and love it for so many reasons.  The hand-crafted wooden timepieces from JORD are incredibly modern in their lines, shapes, and design.  I originally imagined that a wooden timepiece would be clunky.  Not JORD watches.  They are sleek, sophisticated, and classic.

My FRANKIE Series watch is the definition of luxe with it’s ultra slim case, streamlined shape and uncomplicated face. Though it is minimalist in design, it always makes a statement.  Whenever I wear my watch people compliment me and ask where they can get their own.  As you browse the JORD collection on their website, it is clear that luxury, fashion and style are all seriously considered when designing these wooden men’s and women’s watches.

CUSTOMIZATION: Make the Gift Your Own by Engraving Your Watch

Beyond the watches being beautiful, you can also customize your JORD watch’s faceplate by engraving the recipient’s initials, or a sweet message or inside joke. This is why it makes the perfect gift for brides, grooms, parents or the wedding party.  Not only are styles sophisticated and timeless, but you can really step out and make the gift your own by customizing the message to be engraved, as well as the font and size of your message.

IMG_1532

One sweet idea, especially for a bride-to-be, is to engrave the watch with her new name or initials. I am incredibly delighted to take my new husband’s name (and make my maiden name my middle name), so I was all too excited to engrave my watch with my new name along with my wedding date.

Three
SERVICE: A Pleasant Customer Service Experience

Nothing is worse than getting a gift for someone, having to make a change to the gift, and having an unpleasant customer service experience. I am happy to say that you will not have that problem with JORD.  JORD has a very reasonable warranty, repair, exchange and return policy. Beyond that, their customer service team is prompt, accommodating and very professional and helpful.  I had a slight snafu with my watch and the team fixed it within a matter of hours.  Not days, hours.  If I was going to give you a company to compare the service to, think along the lines of Nordstrom and Tiffany & Co.  Yes, they are that good.

xvi I xiv by YCS Capsule Collection Launches

By Erika, Fashion Expert

I know, it’s been quiet around YCS for the past couple of weeks.  But that is only because we have some EXCITING ventures that we have been working on.  In addition to officially partnering with one of my closest friends to officially launch “Come Shop My Closet” (more on that later this week), WE ARE LAUNCHING A CAPSULE CLOTHING COLLECTION!!

Erika and J'Mel

For quite some time I have wanted to launch a clothing line and this year I finally decided to dive in head first!  At times I felt completely overwhelmed, like a crazy lady, or worried that it wasn’t a good idea.  But, after all of that, the xvi I xiv (pronounced “sixteen fourteen”) capsule collection is here! Well, it’s here: www.sixteenfourteen.store.

I decided to start this endeavor with a capsule collection.  One signature t-shirt, inspired by my friend Candice, and one signature dress (that can be built with 30 different combinations), named after my incredibly sweet niece Imani.  I figured that getting my toes wet with only a couple of pieces would be a good way to launch.  But from here, xvi I xiv already has a Collegiate collection in the works for Homecoming season and a fall/winter 2017 collection underway!

There are a couple of things that make this collection unique.  First, whether you are straight or plus sized, clothing styles are the same.  In many stores, once you cross over to the plus size section designs, fabrics, and clothing is, at best, unflattering, and, at worst, downright ugly.  It is important to me that no matter what your size is, you can wear our clothing.  Each piece runs from size 6 – 24.  If, however, you find yourself outside of that threshold, for most pieces, you will have the option of ordering them customized to your specific measurements.  (The only exception is some of our t-shirts.  But you should note that I am working on finding vendors that offer shirts in sizes XXS – 4 or 5X).  Also, you will not pay more money for being plus sized.  Everybody’s items cost the same.

group4.jpg

Second, our items are “buildable.” So, even though we are starting with one t-shirt and one dress, depending on how you build your items you can come up 24 variations of our “Candice” signature t-shirt and 30 variations of our “Imani” dress.  When you check out, you’ll be prompted to select the options you want for your clothing.  So, essentially, every piece you purchase is customized and created specifically for you.  Follow the link to learn more about How it Works.

There is one other thing that you should know.  By virtue of this being a capsule collection, quantities are limited!  Some items we will keep in stock; however, other items are created based on fabric availability and quantities which means that once they are gone, they are gone.  Do not delay in placing your order because you do NOT want to miss you!  You can shop the entire collection here: XVI I XIV.

All week long we will be celebrating our virtual launch party and, as a special treat, I have a couple of discount codes for you!

  • Use the code “CANDICE” to get $10 off the purchase of our signature t-shirt.
  • Use the code “IMANI” to get $20 off your Imani dress purchase.
  • Free shipping (code: FREESHIP is automatically applied) is available on all orders over $149.

*Remember, because every item is custom produced, it will take 3-4 weeks for your customized piece to arrive.

I am SO excited to be launching this collection.  It is truly a daily reminder that dreams DO come true.  They are scary, they take hard work, and sometimes you feel like you are jumping out of a plane – but the absolutely DO come true!

Happy Shopping and Stay Chic!

Brand Spotlight: Bravely "Apparel that Empowers"

By Erika, Fashion Expert

sam_1617Shirt: Bravely I Photo: Rob Bergsted

I have always been taught, and always felt, that I have a voice.  That what I have to say is important and matters.  That people listen to me. But somewhere, maybe around the time Hillary Clinton lost the election and the reality that the rights of minorities, immigrants, women, and countless others were actually in jeopardy, I stopped believing that.  The election was a real blow.  I felt like my voice, and what I had to say, didn’t matter.  I felt like my voice was no match for racism, sexism, homophobia, xenophobia, or mysogyny.  I felt completely deflated, as I am sure a lot of us did.  The result of the election is part of the reason that the Thanksgiving rebirth of YCS never happened.  I had been all set to launch all new blog posts, outfits, ideas, and projects on Black Friday.  But from November 9 until just a few weeks ago, I simply went through the motions and fashion felt frivolous, and, even a little vapid, to me.  I didn’t want to do anything – least of all blog.

But all of that changed with one little Facebook message from my friend Hopie in early January.  “So what’s your address and your t-shirt size? I’m sending you a Bravely shirt–you can wear and represent Bravely as you see fit!” Hopie is the Executive Director of a residential community for women who have survived lives of sexual exploitation, violence and addiction.  And back in September she posted about this incredible social enterprise program called Bravely!  I had been so excited to share Bravely with my readers but, like everything else, it fell by the wayside when I dropped the ball and extended my blogging hiatus for another two months.

So when Hopie sent me the message (and I apologized profusely for dropping the ball) and we had a subsequent exchange she reminded me, in her own subtle way, that I did, indeed, have a voice.  And YCS is a part of that voice.  I can bring a spotlight and attention to whatever I want and today, that spotlight is on Bravely: Apparel that Empowers.

Why Bravely Matters

img_2691_530xPhoto courtesy of www.bravely.org.

“Bravely was conceived by women survivors of sexual exploitation and addiction. We have a message we want to share with the world: that recovery from trauma is possible through love, compassion, and community.

Women employed at Bravely are participants in the Magdalene St. Louis residential program— a community where women live and recover together. Women in this program will likely have first experienced sexual abuse between the ages of 7 and 11, started using drugs by age 12 or 13, and have been on the streets since age 14.

But now we are on the journey to recovery from our past and we journey together bravely.

An essential part of recovery is preparing for employment and developing skills that will empower us to earn a living wage for the rest of our work careers. That’s why Bravely was formed—we design and sell apparel so that we can share our message of hope with you AND so that we can grow our skills in all aspects of running a business: sales, marketing, web design, order fulfilment, book keeping…the list goes on. These are transferable and marketable skills that we will carry with us for life.

When you wear one of our shirts, you are helping us move forward in our journey and you are sharing in the belief that living and loving bravely is the way to a more compassionate and connected world.”

How You Can Help: Shop Bravely

sam_1621Shirt: Bravely I Jeans: Lane Bryant (distressed myself) I Bag: Everlane I Shoes: Elie Tahari I Photo: Rob Bergsted

Shop the entire collection at: www.bravely.org

So here’s the thing about Bravely – not only is it an amazing business and opportunity for these women, the clothes and accessories are also really, really cute!

You know I’m always a fan of a cute (and comfortable) t-shirt and in this department Bravely does not disappoint.  The t-shirts share both empowering (“Love is Brave”) and cheeky (“Compassion is Bada**”) messages and are made out of some of the most comfortable material around.  I have long maintained that a good t-shirt is a wardrobe staple.  What better way to rock this wardrobe must-have than with a dope message?

And, if for some crazy reason t-shirts are not your thing (what kind of monster are you!?!?!?!) then check out their cute accessories which include tote bags and water bottles.  They even have apparel for the fellas!  There is really something for everyone at Bravely.

And, because the team at Bravely is so incredible, they are offering a 15% discount to the entire YCS family by using the code: FRIENDSOFERIKA.

Now, you have no reason to help sell out the store!  This is like buying out Ivy Park but for a much, much, much better reason!

Your Voice Matters

untitled_16_1024x1024Photo courtesy of www.bravely.org.

Now, more than ever, our voice and our dollars matter.  What we say, who we defend, and where we shop can all send a strong message.  We all have a voice and we all can use it to further programs, initiatives, businesses, and organizations that matter.  So I am asking you to use your voice to bring awareness to the things and the people and the causes that matter.  Use your voice to let the world know that Love is Brave, Love Trumps Hate, and that we are all a Work in Progress.  The women who work at Bravely have something to say; it is our job to help them say it.

Stay Chic,
Erika

Who should attend Fashion Labs?

Fashion Labs are available to any and everyone!  Each lab, while covering overall, general topics, will be tailored to the group of attendees.  This means if a few men sign-up for the labs, we will be sure to include information that is helpful and valuable for them.  If it’s all ladies, well then, we’ll keep the men out of it!

Milla's "Chewelry" Offers Fashion and Function for Stylish Moms

By Erika, Fashion Expert

For ten + two and a half days this month, you may have noticed that I had my hands full practicing parenthood with my adorable six- and five-year-old nephew and niece.  Anyone who keeps up with YCS on Instagram and Twitter or with me personally on Facebook knows that it was an adventure!  My niece and nephew are five and six, so they’re fairly independent (within reason) and able to do a lot for themselves.  I cannot imagine what it would have been like if I also had to care for their ten-month-old (teething, forever curious) brother as well!  It is hard work being a mom!!!  (Seriously, kudos to ALL of the moms who read YCS!!!)

After my brief stint in parenthood (for now), I can appreciate how tough the little things are – taking a quiet shower for longer than three minutes, getting dressed in privacy, having an uninterrupted phone call.  And, having the time to put together the sleek, stylish looks that I enjoy so much.

That’s where Milla comes in!  Milla takes moms beyond maternity – providing products that make life with a new baby a little easier.   Milla – Beyond Maternity was founded by a new mom who struggled with finding functional business-appropriate clothing and accessories that were baby-friendly.

thumb_IMG_1284_1024

Wearing “The Pearl” necklace + bracelet and “The Morgan” bracelet in teal.

Milla’s amazing owner was kind enough to loan me some of the Chewelry (chewable + jewelry) pieces and, I must be honest, even though I am not a mom (yet), I think the items are awesome!  They are simple and stylish.  Mom or not – they’re great pieces to add to any wardrobe.  But, beyond their fashion, they’re super functional for new (or not so new) moms.  Milla Chewelry is a line of chewable jewelry made from food-grade, BPA-free silicone safe for teething babies.  Necklaces all include a safety clasp in case your little one tugs too hard.  These styles are easy to wear, and easy to clean. All styles are tested to ensure these functional fashions easily transition from daywear to office wear, so a busy mom doesn’t have to think twice about how to accessorize with or with out the little ones.

Milla Chewelry is very (very) reasonably priced AND it comes in a variety of styles and colors.  My favorite piece is the Alanis bracelet.  It seriously looks like something that I would own in my closet.  The function as a new mom is an added bonus.  I am also way, way, way into the Nessa necklace which is perfect for a easy Saturday or a dressier occasion.  The Quinn necklaces are also very versatile – you can wear them short, like a statement necklace, or let them hang long for a more casual look.

I know that when babies are born most of us focus on giving gifts to the new “tiny human” (that’s Grey’s Anatomy speak for you) that are entering the world.  But honestly, what a great gift for a new mom that lets her know that a) you are thinking of her and b) you understand the need for practicality and safety with her fashion.  As my friends continue to have children (and, no matter how much I ask them to slow down and let my bank account catch up, they keep having them!!!) I am definitely going to incorporate some of these pieces into the gifts I’ll be giving.

Erika's Picks: Five Must-See Movies for Fashionistas

By Erika, Resident Fashionista

Before you read this post, start the playlist below.

We had a particularly rainy weekend here in Philadelphia this weekend.  Which meant that while I was cleaning my house and sourcing my closet for closet sale items I logged several hours on Netflix.  It gave me a chance to finally check out the documentary “Bill Cunningham New York” all about famed New York Times photographer Bill Cunningham who captures uptown and downtown style all across New York City.

As I watched, I added this documentary to my mental list of movies that every fashion girl (and guy) “must-watch.”  It also inspired me to memorialize my mental list.  This list is not, by any means, exhaustive and is could alternatively be called “my favorite fashion movies.”  This list includes cult classics, documentaries, and movies that spawned some of the greatest fashion moments known to man.  And no, “Gone with the Wind” is NOT on this list.  Without further adieu, I present . . .

Five Must-See Movies for Fashionistas

5.  Clueless (1995)

Cher, Dion, and the rest of the crew launched a complete lexicon, spawned a thousand look-a-likes, and introduced Azzedine Alaïa to an entire generation of teenagers.  Aside from being one of the greatest Jane Austen adaptations of our time, Cher’s closet and the film’s 116 outfits make this film worth the watch!

Available on Netflix.

4.  The September Issue (2009)

Unless you live under a rock (which, hey, do you!) you know that American Vogue’s September issue is one of the most important magazines issued each year.  This documentary follows Vogue Editor-in-Chief Anna Wintour and her staff during the production of the 2007 September issue of Vogue. Appearances by the who’s who of the fashion world (designers, photographers, models, actors, etc.) pale only in comparison to watching both Anna Winter and Grace Coddington work.  This is essential fashion viewing for any self-proclaimed fashionista.

Available on Amazon.

3.  The Devil Wears Prada (2006)

I LOVE this movie.  I have seen it, at least, 100 times and there is absolutely NO shame in my game.  Rarely, do I enjoy a film adaptation as much as I enjoy a book; however, “The Devil Wears Prada” is a notable exception.  Acting aside (Meryl Streep can do NO wrong!), the killer fashion, impeccable styling, cameos by fashion royalty (Valentino! Heidi Klum! Gisele!), and endless potent quotables (“gird your loins!”) make this film a must-see for every fashion girl and boy! And those icy stares and biting lines from Miranda Priestly are simply icing on the cake.

Available on Amazon.

2.  Scatter my Ashes at Bergdorf’s (2013)

On any given day, my top three fashion movies could change order.  This is another film I have watched several times and each time I watch I notice something I hadn’t seen before.  In the same way “The September Issue” follows the making of Vogue’s most famous annual issue, this film documents the story of Bergdorf Goodman – New York’s most famous, iconic and exclusive luxury department store.  The documentary covers the history of the store, it’s most famous patrons and most coveted designers.  As a special treat (and my favorite part of the film) the film also captures the process of designing and implementing the store’s famed holiday windows.  By the end, you too may want your ashes scattered at Berdorfs.  Bonus points if you read the book too!

Available via Netflix.

1.  Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1961)

Image via Madison Movies (www.madisonmovie.org)

How an you not love everything about Holly Golightly and this movie?  The  pearls, the sunnies, the LBD, and NYC as the other main character.  I could watch this film over and over and over.  And truly, has there ever been a more iconic opening scene?  In the fashion world, I think not!

Honorable Mention

  • Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead – a cult classic with fantastic fashion to boot!
  • Zoolander – 1 part spoof, 1 part side-splitting comedy, 1 part blue steel, ALL parts wonderful!
  • Bill Cunningham New York – a fashion icon in his own right
  • Sex and the City / Sex and the City 2 (but STRICTLY for the fashion) – there is no denying the amazing wardrobe and styling in both of these films
  • Yves Saint Laurent – this 2014 film documents the famed designers career and struggles

After making this list, I realized I could add about 15 move movies to this list.  Perhaps, a second list is in order!

Erika's Picks: Bathing Suits for Full Figured Women

By Erika, Resident Fashionista

I know that swimsuit season can be a dreaded time for many plus size or full figured women (so, basically women).  Not because it means baring their body, but because it was a time when the store shelves were stocked with a sea of floral, skirted bathing suit options better suited for the grandmas, not Gisele’s, of the world.  Of course, these days, this is no longer the case – there is no shortage of fabulous swimwear available for women of all shapes and sizes.  Below, check out some of my favorite styles for the summer.

Bikinis + Tankinis

I’ll be the first to admit that I am not a fan of MOST tankinis.  Those old lady skirts (no offense to the old ladies) and unflattering tops do nothing to excite me.  Through the years I have found some I like (I even own one) but that has been rare.  I’m happy to report there is a new crop of tankini popping up that are both figure flattering and stylish.

Tankini #1  Tankini #2   Bikini 1   Bikini 2   Bikini 3

Last year, we also saw the more widespread acceptance of plus size bikinis a.k.a “fatkinis.”  Now this is a trend I am fully on board with.  The suits are often cute, trendy, and allow for as little or as much coverage as you’d like, while giving proper support where full figured women need it most.  I even loved the Swim Sexy Pin Up Python suit above so much I got one for myself!

One Piece Swimsuits

One piece swimsuits are always a staple of the season.  Two trends I am loving are the athletic styles that are popping up – think trendy scuba gear and sleek likes – and peek-a-boo details like mesh or even lace!  Both of these trends add unique personality to a swim season staple.

Cutout Swimsuits

Another trend I’m pretty obsessed with is cutout swimsuits!  I love the peek-a-boo styles that are all over the plan for plus size women.  As long as you don’t mind a funky tan line (and what’s a tan line in the name of fashion) these styles may be just up your ally!  They’re the perfect cross between a bikini and one piece.
