BTS: Celebrating Life at Lane Bryant – Bowie Town Center

By Erika, Fashion Expert

Many of our readers may not know that YCS originally started out as an event planning company (along with fashion styling) with a focus on curating fashion-focused events like fashion shows, themed brunches, etc.  Though I got out of the event planning and production business, my love for events has never waned.  That’s why, I was so excited to partner with Lane Bryant – Bowie Town Center to produce an event celebrating life during Breast Cancer Awareness month!

Like so many people, breast cancer has affected my family and so many around me.  My mother and great aunt are both survivors and my aunt is currently battling her second bout with the disease.  She’s totally winning the fight, by the way. I have spent many years fundraising and donating to fight the disease and this event is the perfect marriage between my love of fashion AND my desire to eradicate breast cancer.

When I tell you we have so many awesome things planned for our guests on October 20 – that is NOT an exaggeration.  I thought it would be incredibly fun for me to give you guys some of the inside scoop on the big day and let you meet some of our awesome partners who will be participating. We have an incredible day scheduled complete with the latest curvy fashion, a private shopping event, photographer, make-up artist, and event a masseuse to pamper guests ALL DAY LONG!

Private Shopping + Personal Styling

Untitled design (4)From 9-10 am, we are hosting a private shopping event exclusively for breast cancer survivors and women who are courageously fighting the disease.  Guests will be treated to breakfast sponsored by my friends at 21 Squared and will receive exclusive, private access to the store and the latest F/W styles ahead of regular shopping hours.

At 10am, the general public is invited to shop our store.  We are offering personal styling appointments and bra fittings throughout the day.  It’s the perfect chance for our guests to be pampered and have a stylist help them pull together looks that are both fashion forward and figure flattering.  Of course, I’ll be doing some personal styling and shopping appointments – so hopefully you’ll come in and get to shop with me!

Selfie Station + Professional PhotographytopbottomLogo_small

Of course, I’ll also be hanging out at the selfie station and on social media duty ALL day! Our awesome friends at 21 Squared have sent us some fun goodies for our selfie station where guests can take pictures in the latest curvy fashions and share with all of their social media followers.

Untitled design (5)We are also incredibly excited to have professional photographer, A.E. Moore, Sr. join our event! That’s right ladies – you can shoot with our very own photographer and live the GLAM life – even if just for a day! Not only will he be capturing all of the fun at our event (your social timelines are about to be FLOODED); he’ll also be shooting our guests modeling the latest LB fashion.  A.E. has more than 20 years of photography experience and works to showcase the true essence of each event he photographs.  I am positive he will capture hope, joy, excitement and fun at our event!

Make-Up + Makeovers + Pampering

Untitled design (2)We have to make sure you’re camera ready! The incredibly talented Shari Tiandra will be giving mini makeovers to help unsure you are ready for the Fall season from head to toe! Shari Tiandra is a seasoned make-up artist and entertainment industry veteran – she is the REAL DEAL! Shari Tiandra’s goal is to bring beauty into the lives she enters.  Trust me, she’s going to bring beauty to everyone who meets her this Saturday! Like me Shari’s mother is a breast cancer survivor, so this event is near and dear to her heart.

Untitled design (3)And, as if food, make-up, and photography wasn’t already enough for our guests, we are also going to pamper the ladies who come to shop with us! All day long, we are offering our guests chair massages. Thomas Fluellyn has been a massage therapist since 2001 – so I’d definitely say we are going to be in good hands.  He retired from the Army in 2007 after serving 21 years.  I’d like to go on record and thank Thomas for his service – in the Army AND as a massage therapist.  I’m pretty sure you’ll find me in that chair a time or two as we move through the day!

Social Media

I’ll be sharing the fun via the YCS Instagram and Facebook pages – so make sure you’re following along! You can also follow Lane Bryant – Bowie Town Center on Instagram to see even more pictures from the day! You might even see a familiar face or two!  We

also, obviously, want you to follow the social media accounts of our sponsors and vendors, so take the next two minutes to click the links below and follow along.

There is! We just need you to register!  Plus, if you want to book a personal styling appointment, registering and selecting your time is the best way to do so! To register just visit YCSandLBBowieTC.eventbrite.com.  Yep, registering is really that simple.

Way- back Wednesday: How to Throw a Spa Party

By Erika, Resident Fashionista

In case you missed the memo, we’re celebrating birthdays around these parts! I’m switching things up again and giving you guys a “Way-back Wednesday” post all about how to throw a spa party! I did this last year for my birthday and it was TONS of fun! Check out the simple steps below and host your own spa party!

PS – it’s not too late to wish YCS Donte a Happy Birthday!

How to: Host a Spa Party

By Erika, Resident Fashionista

Hey Loves! I know it’s been ages, and I haven’t exactly stuck to the edicts of my Thirteen in ’13 over the last month. That all changes (hopefully) today! In the coming weeks we’ll review all the fun stuff that has been going on over the past month. I’ve checked out the tri-state area’s best fashion events to give you the scoop on the best designers around (sneak peek: Check out Michael Thomas – ADORE his work!). In an effort to do more posts about events I’ve been cooking up a storm to share great recipes for parties! And, of course, I obsessed over the runways of NY, London and Paris fashion week to get all of the hottest trends for the fall (hello, let’s not rush spring and summer!).

But, before all of that, let’s talk spas!

The older I get (and I just turned 30, so according to my piano student, I am officially old) the more I find myself wanting to host gatherings at my home for my friends. I’d been dying for some time to try Epiphany Mobile Spa and decided my birthday was the perfect excuse to throw a spa party with my closest girls (and one guy!). Planning a spa party is relatively simple (especially if you outsource the heavy lifting like I did) and it’s a great way to spend some girlfriend (and guyfriend) time together!

1. Invitations – Although I love sending formal invitations for events like my summer soiree, I am also a fan of online invitations. For this event, I chose to go with www.punchbowl.com (www.paperlesspost.com is also great). Punch Bowl has a ton of cute and appropriate designs to choose from. You simply customize the invitation with details about your party, add your guests and send!

2. Spa services – As I mentioned, I used the services of Epiphany Mobile Spa at (http://www.epiphanymbs.com/) my party. Epiphany Mobile Spa is a full-service spa that brings the spa experience to your home. Epiphany’s owner Tracey, provided me with a list of reasonably priced packages for guests to choose from. Each package included a facial plus one to two other treatments. Guests at my party enjoyed treatments like foot jellybaths, foot detoxes, hand and foot heat treatments, and back and neck massages. As an aside: we loved having Epiphany at our spa party! I highly recommend the service! Thanks to my bloggy girlfriend for introducing us at her Joy of Giving Charity event!

If you do not choose to have a spa service come into your home, there are plenty of at home spa treatments you can set up for your guests. The internet is full of recipes for face masks, body scrubs, lip balms and hand treatments. Check out some great tips from Glamour Magazine (http://www.glamour.com/beauty/2008/11/13-diy-at-home-spa-tricks#slide=1).

3. Guest Activities – In addition to the spa services provided by Epiphany, I also set-up a nail bar for guests to do manicures and pedicures. I simply pulled out my nail polishes and set up bowls to soak hands, nail polish remover, cotton balls and manicure tools. Michael’s as a great variety of manicure kits and emery boards priced from $1-$2 dollars. It really doesn’t get much better than that! You could also offer your guests a make-up bar, makeover consultations or a variety of fun activities.

4. The Food – Prepping themed food for a party is one of my favorite things to do! I love coming up with a creative and unique menu to match my events. For the spa party I decided to keep things light – tea sandwiches, shrimp cocktail, a meat and cheese tray, mini-cupcakes and cake ball truffles made by a friend. Tea sandwiches are very appropriate for a spa party and incredibly easy to make. We had traditional cucumber butter and egg salad tea sandwiches. But, for fun, I also added a peanut butter-bacon-banana tea sandwich. Of course, those were a hit! Check out the Food Network’s list of 50 tea sandwiches to get some great ideas: http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes-and-cooking/50-tea-sandwiches/index.html.

5. The Cocktails – Cocktails are the best part of any party! We sipped on our signature cocktail, cucumber martinis, as well as champagne, wine, mixers and of course, water!! I used this easy recipe for our signature cocktail: http://localfoods.about.com/od/drinks/qt/cucumbermartini.htm

6. The Gifts – Anyone who has ever been to a dinner or party at my home knows that I love to send my guests home with a little gift – from personalized margarita glasses to mardi gras beads. I sent my guests home with this simple, easy to make sugar scrub (recipe: http://www.theidearoom.net/2009/03/make-your-own-brown-sugar-scrub.html). I purchased a dozen 4oz jars from my local Giant grocery store for about $10. The labels and tags came from Michael’s; again, both were less than $10. Mixing the scrub was ridiculously easy and and everyone went home with a personalized jar! Other gift ideas include: manicure sets, homemade lip balms or scrubs, bath salts, nail polish, or relaxation kits (tea bag, honey stick and eye mask). You do not have to spend a ton to make your guests feel special!

7. The Atmosphere – Spa parties are easy. You pretty much just need to dim the lights, light a bunch of candles and play soft soothing music. Seriously. That’s it.

Whew! That was quite a post! But hopefully, you’ll take some of these simple tips and tricks and host your own spa party. For one, two or 20 of your closest friends! Be sure to snap pics and send along your special tips! I LOVE seeing how everyone makes a special event their own!

Just One Thing: Gartner Studios Invitations

“It’s just one thing that got me trippin’!” – Amerie, “Just One Thing”

Personally, I love sending (and receiving) printed invitations to parties and events. Yes, Evite is cool and Paperless Post is even better, but, there is something about opening up an envelope with an invitation that makes me (and hopefully others) feel special.

20120718-075643.jpg

I send my fair share of Evite and Paperless Post invitations. Let’s be real, it surely is fast and convenient. However, for my annual summer soirée I always send out printed invitations. People often believe that I have the invitations professionally printed. And while that would be nice, I’d rather spend that money on shoes. Each year, I purchase an invitation kit and print my invitations at home.

20120718-075844.jpg

One of my favorite brands for invitations is Gartner Studios. They offer a variety of sizes, counts and designs. They also offer online templates for layout and wording for your invitation. Using Gartner Studios’ templates is so simple it’s positively sinful. Gartner Studios provides quality paper stock and has yet to disappoint me. The best part? Complete invitation kits are reasonably priced ($19.99 and up)!

20120718-080454.jpg

The next time you throw an event consider taking a little extra time and mailing invitations. And make sure you add me to the guest list 😉
