Way-back Wednesday: Philly Fashion Week Recap

By Erika, Resident Fashionista

Yesterday the latest season of Philly Fashion Week (PFW) kicked off. This season, in addition to the staple ready-to-wear and couture runway shows, the organizers have added a number of new events, including a men’s runway show. Since I’ll be posting the latest Beauty Box 5 review tomorrow in lieu of our regular “Throwback Thursday” post, I thought I’d get you guys ready for PFW with a “Way-back Wednesday” recap of last season at PFW. Check out the post below. And let the YCS team know if you’ll be in attendance at any of the events!

Philly Fashion Week Recap

By Erika, Resident Fashionista

Hey guys! As I mentioned last week, YCS is covering a TON of fashion events and giving you all of the scoop. On Friday and Saturday September 20 and 21, YCS Alexis and I attended Philly Fashion Week’s Ready-to-Wear and Couture Runway Shows. Nearly 30 designers were on hand to present their latest collections for all to see!

While there were plenty of memorable moments and pieces, here are my favorites from the weekend.

Faithful by Michael Thomas
Once again, Michael Thomas did not disappoint. Originally scheduled to close out Friday’s shows, Michael ended up opening the show with a bang! The cobalt blues, yellows and silvers that weaved throughout this cohesive collection were a beautiful, bold statement made by the designer. Per usual, Michael’s tailoring was impeccable and it was clear from this collection that he has the construction skills and understanding of woman’s body to back up all the hype. Michael’s spring/summer 2014 collection was ultra-feminine, which was a sharp contrast to his fall/winter 2013 collection. The luxe and sophisticated fabrics moved beautifully down the runway. Once again, we were presented with a stellar collection from Michael Thomas.

The Menswear Designers
Aside from Michael Thomas, other standouts of the weekend were the menswear designers, particularly Friday night’s bunch. The collections Chevalier Homme, Extraordinary Gentleman, and Modish presented were among my favorites of the weekend. Some thoughts I used to describe the collections in my notes were, “impeccably tailored men’s pieces; cross between hipster and nerd but much, much cooler; cohesive and confident,” (Chevalier Homme); “crisp, clean, easy; mixed materials but still no fuss; effortless; a cool mix of male and female silhouettes,” (Extraordinary Gentleman); “worked the leather beautifully; from the runway to Yeeze’s closet to mine; beautifully constructed; thoughtful, well planned and executed collection,” (Modish).

Check out our YCS TV video featuring Michael Thomas’ full runway presentation.

Couture Designers
One of my disappointments was that many of the designers in the couture shows actually presented ready-to-wear collections and would have been better suited for Friday’s runway. However, two Saturday standouts were Closet by Christobal and Cory Couture. Closet by Christobal presented beautifully designed (and wearable) pieces accented with over-the-top headpieces and accessories. If you’ve hung around YCS enough, you know I LOVE a fantastic headpiece! They even threw hats into the audience during the finale walk – and you know I was able to snag one! Cory Couture presented one of the only true couture runway shows of the evening. The pieces displayed the over-the-top whimsy and designs one hopes to see at a couture show. While some seemed slightly over-worked, the quality, craftsmanship, and overall beauty were undeniable.

Here are some photos from Saturday and video from the weekend’s events.

Fun Fashion Week Pop-Ups

By Alexis

This past week marked the kick-off of Philly Fashion Week, or PFW, and the city of brotherly love did not disappoint.

There were a ton of cool fashion shows and pop-ups for us fashionistas. I was thrilled to attend two pop-ups on behalf of Your Chic is Showing.

First up was the PFW Fashion & Style Event/LUX Accessories Pop-up at Tommi Studio Salon & Spa. I was very excited to go to this event (they promised manicures, massages, live hair and makeup-demos), but sadly, the only thing they had to offer were the accessories. Even though I was a little bit disappointed, I still had a great evening and found some really cool pieces. Below are some of my favorites!

Untitled Untitled1 Untitled2

These three accessories from the Sylvans Collection, located in New York, were brought in by Angela Edmunds, from showroom77, and her friend Briana Rivas, who is a fashion and beauty blogger for Sequin Gowns & Mermaid Crowns.  Angela told me that statement rings are very in right now and I have to say, they were my favorite. She recommended wearing a couple on each hand if you want to bump it up a notch. I also learned that you couldn’t go wrong with a pop of color in the Fall.

You can find Angela at http://www.showroon77.net and Briana at sequingownsandmermaidcrowns.blogspot.com.

Untitled4 Untitled3 5

These pieces were brought in from Jessica Healey who is the Philadelphia representative for Cayetano Legacy Collection. This collection was made by three sisters who are first generation Philippino-Americans. It was amazing to see their heritage incorporated into the collection as some jewelry contained all natural stones straight from the Philippines. Jessica’s favorite piece was the gold draping beads necklace; she was a huge advocate of Fall statement accessories.

If I had to pick my own statement piece it would have been the flower necklace. The craftsmanship was definitely top notch.

You can check out this jewelry at http://www.cayetanolegacy.com. There’s also a 20% discount that you can use which is CLCPHILLY.

These last two pieces were brought in by Phenise and Ms. Brenda from their company Plain Elain. Phenise wanted to make head pieces that were affordable and gorgeous and I think she succeeded. I especially loved the studded headbands and the veils. Phenise said veils are very in for Fall and people should not be afraid to try them. This sounds perfect for the Fall bride. J

You can find these pieces at http://plainelainmillinery.weebly.com/about.html.

The other pop-up event I went to was the Fashionaires Vintage Designer Pop-up at the Palomar Hotel. This was a gorgeous venue for an upscale event. The Fashionaires, Tara Destribats, and her sister-in-law, Tracey, have done pop-ups in New York and New Jersey so it was exciting that they came to Philadelphia. This event had beautiful vintage designer pieces and fantastic discounts. Below are some pictures of all the gorgeous clothes and accessories.

Overall this was a fun week and I enjoyed being able to go to these events on behalf of Your Chic is Showing. Plus, you can never have too many excuses to dress up. Is MY chic showing? I hope so!

FBH Philly Fashion Week Ready-to-Wear Runway Show, Crane Arts (FBH Philly Fashion Week)
On the first night of FBH Philly Fashion Week’s runway shows, 14 designers will show off their latest ready-to-wear runway collections.
Who we’re dying to see: Michael Thomas, a favorite of YCS, earns the coveted closing show at tonight’s runway presentation. That’s a tall order; but, if anyone is up for the challenge it is Mr. Thomas whose collections are always thoughtfully put together with a continuity and maturity that far exceeds his years.

September 21
FBH Philly Fashion Week Haute Couture Runway Show, Crane Arts (FBH Philly Fashion Week)
FBH Philly Fashion Week concludes with the Haute Couture Runway show where 12 local and national designers will display the latest in haute couture fashion.

September 27 & 28
Atlantic City Fashion Week Full Figured and Ready to Wear Runway Show, The Pier Shops at Caesar’s (Atlantic City Fashion Week)
Atlantic City Fashion Week Couture Runway Show, The Pier Shops at Caesar’s (Atlantic City Fashion Week)

Once again, YCS will be covering the runways of Atlantic City Fashion Week held at the Pier Shops at Caesar’s. At the spring shows, I fell in absolute LOVE with Duke and Winston (www.dukeandwinston.com) and I’m hoping for a similar experience with the designers showcasing during the fall shows.
Who we’re dying to see: Cultured Couture has been on my radar since 2012 when I saw them at an outdoor fashion event in Rittenhouse park. The sophisticated, vintage looks make me yearn for the days when people dressed up for everything – whether it was a trip to the market or a trip to another country.

October 12
Curvy Closets, The Crane Arts
As you guys know from our previous post, YCS will be at the Curvy Closets Fashion Event to give you all the latest scoop on the plus sized fashion scene. Alexis and I had a chance to get some behind-the-scenes details from Curvy Closets co-producers, Colleen and Dominique, and the Curvy Closets Correspondent, friend to YCS, Aleea from A Happy Slappy Greeting! My interviews will be posted soon, but you can check out a couple sneak peeks on the YCS Instagram and Facebook accounts.

October 13
C.U.R.V.V. , an Exhibit Curated by ChaCha N’Kole, University of Pennsylvania Museum
There is a ton of full figured love going around these days and this exhibit and short film keep on spreading it! This is the “first ever museum exhibition to highlight full-figured high-fashion.” All I have to say is, “it’s about darn time!” I’m super excited to be covering this event and getting and exclusive interview with the cast of the corresponding short film, also entitled “C.U.R.V.V.” Make sure you come check out this event!

Runway Round-up: Who Got Next (Part 1)?

Throughout February and March I spent some time attending local fashion shows and presentations including, Atlantic City Fashion Week, Philly Fashion Week, Faithful by Michael Thomas and the Urban FLRT Trunk Show.  I had the opportunity to see and meet a number of talented designers.  In our Runway Round-up series, I’ll share with you my favorite up-and-coming designers in two parts.   The third part of the series will focus on the trends for spring/summer/fall that were showcased on the runways.

Who Got Next?

Michael Thomas (Faithful by Michael Thomas)

Website I Facebook

From the minute you lay eyes on the Fall 2013 Collection of Faithful by Michael Thomas you will notice the time, effort and care that went into preparing this collection.  Beyond the immaculate tailoring and impeccable design, you will also be struck the designer’s youthful look and demeanor (both of which belie his seven years in the industry) and, more so, how mature the work is.  Upon my arrival at Showroom 77 for the Fall 2013 Collection presentation of Faithful, I was treated to a personalized tour and description of the garments by the designer himself (a completely swoon-worthy moment for any style blogger).  Michael explained to me that the collection was inspired by male/female androgyny.  He played with the shapes and lines of both the male and female form and then expertly mixed and matched them on the models (of note: the black suit pictured is actually a men’s suit which he fit to a female model).  The collection also features beautiful draping, luxurious wools and a rich colors.  In my opinion, the standout look from the collection is the winter white pants-suit with gold buttons and detailing.  You could see every woman in the venue salivating over this look – myself included!  The Faithful by Michael Thomas Fall 2013 Collection brings sophistication and class back to fashion, both of which are welcome after the Technicolor 80’s revival that has taken over the last few years.  Of all the runway shows and fashion presentations, I can, without a doubt, say that this was my favorite.  I know that this will NOT be the last we hear of Michael Thomas.  Check out a few pics from the presentation below:

Duke and Winston

Website I Facebook

Granted, Duke and Winston is not new to the scene.  However, given that a majority of Duke and Winston’s clothing is menswear, you can’t exactly fault me for not having it on my radar.  That all changed when I caught their runway show at Atlantic City Fashion Week.  The Duke and Winston collection housed everything I love – preppy style, clean lines, and unique graphic tees.  Even though these were male models on the stage, I saw about four tees I wanted to take home with me immediately.  I found myself completely obsessed with the collection and perusing the website almost as soon as I got home (yes, it was nearly 2am!).  In addition to classic polo shirts and a sleek tie collection, gentlemen will definitely want to check out the diverse graphic tee collection.  My favorites are those featuring the face of Duke and Winston’s mascot, the bulldog; I particularly like the “Long Live Duke” and “Gentleman Duke II” t-shirts.  Ladies should definitely check out the cute beach tanks and Fox & Tail collaboration pieces.    Duke and Winston is not just a t-shirt line, it is a lifestyle – as evidenced by the ties, kids tees, and accessories for both people (think candles, key chains, koozies and caps) and pets (including collars, leashes and even hoodies!).  Duke and Winston definitely presented my favorite men’s collection from both Atlantic City Fashion Week and Philly Fashion Week.  You can bet that an online order (or three!) has already been placed and a trip to the Philadelphia flagship store is not far behind!  Check out video from the finale walk on the Duke and Winston runway:

Be sure to check back later this week as I continue my Runway Round-up.  What do you think of the looks from Michael Thomas and Duke and Winston?  Weigh in below!

With Love, Erika

What to Wear: to Fashion Week

It is the most wonderful time of the year!  OK, maybe 2nd most wonderful time, behind only Christmas.  That’s right – Fashion Week!  For the month of February Fashion Week will be taking place the world over (literally) and all of your favorite designers will present their fall collections – before we’ve even had a chance to rock the latest looks from the spring likes (spring please come SOON!).  This year, although I begrudgingly could not attend the #NYFW debut of emerging designer Urbana Chappa’s line, Maison de Urbana, I am lucky enough to be attending 5 (squeeeeeeeeeal) presentations and fashion shows during Atlantic City Fashion Week and Philly Fashion Week.  Of course, that left (and still leaves) me begging the questions – WHAT DO I WEAR?

Before I share what I have decided to wear – so far – (you didn’t really think I’d leave you hanging, did you?), there are a few hard and fast rules to live by when strutting your stuff during fashion week (or any other week really).

  • Stay true to who you are – This is the number one thing I found when researching what to wear.  Which is great, because I try to live by this anyway.  In general I skew towards clean lines, classic silhouettes, and timeless pieces.  Fashion Week would NOT be the time for me to experiment with graphic patterns, boxy silhouettes, or anything else I don’t feel comfortable in.  Yes, you can punch up your style for Fashion Week, but the key is that it is YOUR style.
  •  It’s OK to mix new with old – I get it.  It is TEMPTING to go out and buy a completely new wardrobe to attend the shows and presentations.  That is a terrible idea – mostly because how are you going to pay your rent/mortgage, heat (it’s so cold in the D!), etc.?  It’s better to pick up a couple of new pieces that you can mix and match with what you already have.  I bought 2 new shirts, a new skirt and a new blazer (all for less than $150) that I will be mixing and matching with what is already in my closet.  I also made sure to pick pieces that I will wear independently of Fashion Week.
  • You don’t have to be all designer everything – Yes, I will be wearing a few key designer pieces while I sit next to the runway tonight at AC Fashion Week (i.e. Elie Tahari shoes and Nneka Saran clutch) but those will be mixed in with more inexpensive items like my Roz and Ali top (purchased at Dress Barn).  My style and aesthetic has always been to mix high and low and Fashion Week is definitely the time to do that.
  • Wear comfortable shoes – That can be whatever is comfortable to you.  I can wear a pair of Tahari round toe pumps all the live long day.  Literally.  I’ve logged 18+ hours in my fave color blocked pair.  So, it won’t be a big deal for me to use those to anchor my looks.  But, it might not make sense if you’re running between shows at Bryant park to be teetering in sky high heels.  Bring a pair of ballet flats that fit in your clutch and switch your shoes before you go in.  Or, better yet, just wear a pair you can zip back and forth in.  Fashion Week is also NOT the time to break in a new pair of shoes, no matter how tempting it may be.

Now that we’ve gotten that out of the way, one of the looks I’ve pulled together for the shows and presentations I will be attending.  These are simply pictures of the pieces/look that will come together.  I will be posting pictures on facebook (www.facebook.com/yourchicisshowing), Instagram (@yourchicisshowing), Twitter (@urchicisshowing) and Pinterest (www.pinterest.com/yourchicisshowing) during my adventures.  And, of course I can’t give away all of my secrets – mostly because I haven’t picked out all of my outfits – so you’ll definitely have to check back for the rest of the looks.

Atlantic City Fashion Week – Friday February 8, 2013

Top: Roz & Ali for Dress Barn (www.dressbarn.com)

Pants: Michael Kors (note, pair above is similar to what I will be wearing, but not exact) (www.michaelkors.com)

Clutch: Nneka Saran (www.nnekasaran.com)

Shoes: Elie Tahari (www.elitahari.com)

Jewelry: Would you believe I still haven’t decided?

Hair: Just a little trim to clean up the pixie.  I’ll keep it in a traditional pixie style for this event.

Make-up: Natural neutral tones on the eyes and a bright (!!!) red lip.  A little bronzer on the cheeks and I’ll be good to go!

How I picked this look: AC Fashion Week features both ready to wear and couture looks so I didn’t want to pick anything too casual or too over the top.  I am SICK of dreary winter colors, so I decided this cream top would be a great way to change up my winter blues.  I had originally planned to rock a pair slim-fit black ankle pants; but, when they called for rain all day long I decided that a pair of cream slacks in a heavier material would fit the bill.  Side note: After an intense game of dress-up I went BACK to wearing slim fit ankle pants.  Rain, sleet and snow be darned! Picking the shoes was easy as the sequin detail in my shoe matches that of the bow in the top.  And, I love how the Nneka Saran bag provides a bit of a tribal feel as compared to the simple elegance of the outfit.  Really, you can’t go wrong with a bright red lip when rocking black and white, so it only seemed fitting to wear that, and not much else in the way of make-up.
