Not My Best Day

We ALL have bad days.  This shirt is a reminder that we are all human and that some days will be better than others.  Just because it isn’t your best day that doesn’t mean you can’t still look cool.

Epic Chic Collection: Not My Best Day

Chic Happens

So who is going to be the first to order from the Epic Chic Collection and tag us on IG so we can see how you styled it?  You know that, of course, I’ll be shooting in several of these looks for you all.  If I wasn’t packing to move, I’d be playing dress up as we speak!

Around the World in 60 Days!

By Erika, Resident Fashionista

OK, so maybe I haven’t exactly been around the world (but come October, when I head to Dubai, that will absolutely be the case!) but I have been out and about.  If you keep up with me or YCS via Facebook and Instagram you may have seen some of the adventures I have had over the past few months.  In the last 60 days alone I have been to seven (yep, seven!) states and have been keeping myself plenty busy with work, play, and, of course, fashion!  Below you will find a pretty random sampling of what I have been up to as well as shopping information for some of the looks you have seen featured on Instagram and Facebook.

I love to travel!  And, it’s a good thing because my full-time job has kept me pretty busy on the road for the past couple of months, including trips to Utah and Minnesota!  Of course, I always try my best to travel in style and keep it fashionable!

Jetsetting in a comfy, casual, and stylish outfit.  Jetsetter tip: If you’re flying dress in layers.  Airplanes are usually chilly, but airports and destinations will vary in temperature.  You don’t want to get stuck buying a $50 hoodie because of poor planning!

[Shirt: ADIVA I Jacket + Leggings: Avenue I Glasses: Tory Burch]

The hallway in my home has looked like this for the longest time!  I wasn’t a believer in hardshell luggage until I bought my first piece last October. Now, I love it and I recently purchased a carry-on size to add to my collection.  Jetsetter tip: 360 spinner wheels are a MUST on rolling luggage.

I just adore the beautiful monogrammed pieces from Boulevard and couldn’t resist picking up a couple monogrammed “Amelia” luggage tags in “Poppy.”  And, at only $28 each, they’re a steal!  Visit their website to pick up your own!

Beautiful Minnesota sunset!

The mountain backdrop was gorgeous as we hit the highways of Utah!  Even though it was April we experienced spring-like weather and a snow storm all on the same trip!

Anyone who knows me knows that I am a proud graduate of Howard University in Washington, DC.  I basically work to get HU into every conversation any chance I get.  This year, I celebrated my 10-year reunion with my classmates and we had a blast!  Howard is KNOWN as a fashionable and stylish university, so, of course, I had to come to the reunion with my A-game.  What do you guys think?

During my adventures I also had a chance to check out the Ashley Stewart “Love Your Curves” Tour during it’s stop in Philadelphia, PA.  You all know that around YCS we are ALL about embracing our curves and loving the skin we are in.  So, it was a no brainer that I had to check out this event.  The tour, which also made a stop in Chicago, and will be heading to Baltimore, Detroit, New York, and Atlanta, was all about embracing your curves and connecting with some of the cities most stylish women.  Hosted at the West Philadelphia location, the event featured a model casting, red carpet, giveaways, and, naturally, shopping discounts.

As if all of the aforementioned fun wasn’t enough, I’ve also attended my fair share of fundraising events over the past two months.  One event that I am always happy to support is the Kappa Beautillion program sponsored by the Burlington-Camden Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.  I have been a long-time support of this program and it is always a pleasure to watch these boys grow into distinguished, young gentlemen.  Additionally, for the first time, I attended the “Wall Ball” sponsored by the Mural Arts program here in Philadelphia.  The event featured live mural painting and design, a live auction, a fantastic DJ, great food, and, duh, fabulous art!

The dress code for the “Wall Ball 2015” was “festive cocktail” attire.  I don’t think cocktail attire gets more festive than metallic gold!

[Dress: Eliza J (currently unavailable)]

Don’t let anyone tell you that you cannot wear a patterned gown to a formal event. You will look fabulous and stand out in a sea of dark dresses. Pro tip: If you’re wearing a patterned gown that could skew “maxi dress” be sure to dress it up with jewelry and the right heels.

[Dress: Jessica Howard]

As if all of that wasn’t enough, I’m also in the middle of redecorating my 2nd bedroom (for real this time) to turn it into a grown-up office!  I’ve hired friend to YCS Cherise, of Ispaci, to help with the project and it’s going amazing.  I can’t wait to share the finished results with all of you on YCS!

22617_10100789743085410_2692695420253934204_n#currentsituation.  Except now there is also a chaise lounge in the middle of my living room!  It’s going to be so worth it at the end of all of this!!

So there it is, a chic peek into my life over the last few months.  What have you guys been up to?  I want to hear all about it!

YCS Style Diary: An Unexpected Pair

By Erika, Resident Fashionista

I have the pleasure of serving on the Praise Team at my church. Each week we are given a color scheme to wear to help the team look unified and cohesive. Usually I’m 100% behind the color combos; but every now and then we get a color scheme that leaves me thinking “I don’t get it.” This was the case when we got “red and turquoise” as our main color combo.

I would be lying to you if I said that I was excited about this scheme. I was not. I had no idea how it was going to work. It had just never occurred to me to try to put these colors together. And, I bet, for many of you it never occurred to you to try and pair these two colors. However, when I paired the two colors and anchored them with white and tan something magical happened. I ended up with a look inspired by a southwestern color scheme that looked natural, native, and, much to my surprise, super cute!!

Today’s style diary is another twist on the contrasting color pairing that is perfect for the springtime weather. Light, airy, and fun – this outfit is perfect for an afternoon date, lunch with friends, or a casual evening activity.

I chose to keep things simple and subtle and love the way the colors pop against each other. Will you guys be trying this color combo? Can you think of any other combos that seem “out there” but end up working? You know the drill!

YCS Style Diary: Chambray My Way

By Erika, Resident Fashionista

For a while I was hesitant to jump on the chambray bandwagon.  Although I found it super cute on others, I thought it would make me look like my eight-year-old (but still totally adorable) self.  Plus, all the plus-sized chambray tops that I saw were so . . . extra (for lack of a better word) with their rhinestones, jewels, patterns, lace, etc.

Then, one day, I happened upon this super cute, super simple chambray shirt and the rest is, well, history!  The thing I love about chambray is that you can go totally casual with a full-on jean look, or you can use it to tone down dressier pieces.  I opted for the latter and paired the top with a leather pencil skirt.  Flats make this the perfect outfit for Saturday brunch with the girls or an afternoon spent strolling.

Have you guys embraced the chambray trend? How do you wear your chambray?  You know what to do!

YCS Style Diary: Center City Chic

By Erika, Resident Fashionista

Often times I’ll get asked to share looks I’ve posted on the YCS Instagram account on the blog.  There are far too many outfits posted on Instagram to document them all on YCS; but, the outfit below has been requested on several occasions (mostly because I’ve worn it on several occasions, ha!).

I’ve worn the outfit below to the office, to client meetings, and to fashion shows.  Simply switching up the purse takes it from a day at the office to an evening with friends.  The look is simple and pulled together however, the leather keeps it interesting.

Most of the YCS family has seen this look on Instagram or the individual pieces used in other looks.  I am happy to share to share the full look with you guys. And, of course, when you really want to see something featured let us know!  We’re in the business of giving you what you want!

YCS Style Diary: Weekend Casual

By Erika, Resident Fashionista

Editor’s Note: Apologies for the indoor photos at my front door.  We shot on a day that was way too snowy/icy to shoot outside!

I live jeans and comfortable tops on the weekends.  I have stated on more than one occasion how much I LOVE a good, comfortable v-neck t-shirt.  And my love for cozy sweatshirts cannot be over stated.  Just because I like to be chic that doesn’t mean I forget about comfort (usually) – especially on the weekends.  The outfit featured today is something you would typically find me rocking on the weekend.  It’s equal parts preppy and cozy and 100% my signature style.

Glasses: Derek Cardigan (via I Scarf + Jacket: Dressbarn I Sweatshirt: Avenue I Jeans: Old Navy

Ring: H&M I Watch: Avenue I Shoes: Dimmi

One of my favorite things about this outfit is the shoes.  Not only are they super comfortable (when I bought them I believe the term I used was “stupid comfortable”) but they are also a brand that was founded with the purpose of doing good.  100% good, in fact.  Dimmi was a shoe line created by the Consolidated Shoe Co. in memory of Richard A. Carrington, who ran the family business.  He died of ALS and the company decided in 2011 to create the Dimmi shoe with the sole (no pun intended) purpose of giving away 100% of wholesale profits to medical research.  I always love when you can look good and do good!

You can learn more and score your own pair of Dimmis at

I love layering cozy pieces together in the fall/winter.  The great thing about the blazer featured in this outfit is that it is made of sweatshirt material – so I’m literally piling cozy layer on top of cozy layer.

So, my loves, what are you guys rocking on the weekends?  And are you a comfy cozy kind of person or do you keep it buttoned up on weekends too?

You know the deal – weigh in below!

YCS Style Diary: Uniformity

By Erika, Resident Fashionista

If you follow YCS on Instagram then the outfit featured in today’s YCS Style diary post will look familiar. On Sunday, I waxed poetic about how it’s ok to have a style uniform and I mentioned that mine is black and white. I can come up with infinite ways to wear it and it will never get old to me. Once you have your “style uniform” aka “go to look” you can make sure to add interest and depth by doing thinks like mixing fabrics, patterns, textures, and styles.

Black and white takes on an interesting feel when you mix chiffon with leather or stripes with dots. Just because your go to look is easy doesn’t mean it has to be boring.

The great thing about your style “uniform” is that it can speak completely to your personal style. I like black and white because it is classic, simple, and sophisticated. It’s hard to get it wrong and I always feel put together when I wear it. You want your uni to make you feel your best. That’s really the only requirement!

So, what’s your style uniform?

YCS Style Diary: A Little Twist

By Erika, Resident Fashionista

As many of you know, I work in corporate America by day – and I think we get a bad wrap for being boring, predictable, etc. when it comes to fashion. Although I do spend my time being dressed up and ready to meet clients, I have a lot of flexibility to be creative within the “rules” of corporate attire.

Today, I’m wearing a suit with “a little twist.” I love this skirt and could have easily paired it with the matching jacket or a black blazer. Instead, I chose to add my fave winter wool blazer in orange. I love the way orange and turquoise look together; however, a turquoise top may have been too much for the office. Instead, I chose to pair it with turquoise jewelry. And simple black turtleneck and tights complete today’s look.
